Plasma Resurfacing Pre & Post Care

Clinician performing a device skin treatment on a client's face

Alma Opus Plasma Resurfacing is an advanced fractional radiofrequency treatment that deliberately creates a controlled wound-healing response. Preparing your skin correctly, and caring for it carefully afterwards, are important parts of your result. Your Dermal Clinician customises the treatment intensity to your skin, concerns, treatment area and your personalised plan within our Skin Transformation System.

Quick care reminder

  • Protect the healing skin: keep your skin clean, and use only the recovery products your Dermal Clinician recommends.
  • Keep cool: avoid heat, heavy sweating, saunas, steam and hot water while the skin is actively healing.
  • Do not pick: let pixelated crusting and flaking release naturally.
  • SPF 50+: protect the new skin carefully from UV every day, once sunscreen can be comfortably applied.

Before your treatment

  • For about 5 to 7 days before treatment, unless your Dermal Clinician advises otherwise, avoid retinol, retinal, prescription vitamin A, exfoliating acids, scrubs, home peels and other strong or irritating active skincare.
  • Keep your skin well hydrated, and avoid tanning or significant unprotected sun exposure.
  • Tell us about any recent laser, IPL, Skin Needling, chemical peels, surgery or other cosmetic treatments.
  • Do not proceed with treatment if the area is sunburnt, infected, broken or significantly irritated.
  • Tell your Dermal Clinician about any medical conditions, medication changes, implanted electrical devices, metal implants near the treatment area, pregnancy, breastfeeding, history of abnormal wound healing, active cold sores or other changes to your health.
  • Numbing cream is optional. Opus Plasma can feel considerably stronger than many of our other skin treatments, particularly with more corrective resurfacing. If you would prefer to numb, discuss it with us before your appointment and follow the instructions for the specific numbing product.

On the day

  • You may feel heat, prickling, stinging and a strong sunburn-like sensation during treatment. Discomfort can continue for up to about 24 hours afterwards, depending on treatment intensity and your individual response.

After your treatment: the first 24–48 hours

  • Days 1 to 2: your skin may look very red and feel warm, tight, swollen and sensitive, like a strong sunburn. Swelling can occasionally look more noticeable the next morning, especially around the eyes. A clean fan or cool compress may be used for comfort.
  • Think clean, protected and calm. With clean hands, gently cleanse the treated area morning and evening with the cleanser your Dermal Clinician recommends, using cool or lukewarm water. Don't use hot water, scrubs, cleansing brushes or face cloths over the resurfaced skin. Pat dry gently.
  • Apply Occlusiderm, or your prescribed post-procedure barrier product, as directed. Barrier care generally continues for around 5 to 7 days, before moving to gentle moisturising and sun protection as the skin surface recovers.
  • Don't introduce any other skincare unless your Dermal Clinician has approved it.
  • Don't apply regular makeup over freshly resurfaced or open skin.

The following days and weeks

  • Days 2 to 5: tiny pixelated areas of crusting become more visible, and your skin may feel dry, rough, tight, itchy or flaky. This is expected. Do not pick, scratch, scrub or exfoliate the crusting.
  • Days 5 to 14: the crusting and flaking gradually release naturally, redness continues to settle and the skin barrier recovers. More intensive treatments may take longer to heal.
  • Weeks 2 to 4 and beyond: your skin continues to improve in texture, tone and firmness as collagen remodelling continues over the following weeks and months.
  • Avoid hot showers directly over the treated skin, saunas, steam rooms, spas, vigorous exercise, heavy sweating and excessive heat while the skin is red, swollen, sensitive or crusting.
  • For 4 weeks, avoid: sun exposure and solariums; tanning; vigorous exercise and heavy sweating; saunas, spas and steam rooms; swimming (pools and ocean); and picking scabs.
  • Once the crusting has released and the skin surface has healed, mineral makeup may be used if needed. Use freshly cleaned brushes and applicators, and apply and remove makeup very gently.
  • For at least 2 weeks, and longer if your skin has not fully healed, avoid: retinol, retinal and prescription vitamin A; glycolic, lactic, mandelic and salicylic acids; benzoyl peroxide; hydroquinone and bleaching creams; strong pigment-correcting products; chemical peels; scrubs, exfoliating brushes and home peels; and strong alcohol-based or irritating products. Your skin decides when actives restart, not simply the number of days that have passed.
  • Freshly resurfaced skin is more vulnerable to UV and unwanted pigment change. Avoid unnecessary direct sun exposure for about 4 weeks. Once your skin can comfortably tolerate sunscreen, use broad-spectrum SPF 50+ every day, reapply outdoors, wear a hat and seek shade.
  • Support collagen from the inside out: stay well hydrated, eat adequate protein, include vitamin C-rich foods, eat a varied, nutrient-rich diet, prioritise sleep and recovery, and avoid smoking. Supplements may help where there is a genuine nutritional need, but extra supplements do not automatically create more collagen.
