Skin Needling in Canberra

Skin needling, also called collagen induction therapy or microneedling, is a core treatment in our Regenerate range at Skin Wellness Academy in Canberra. It promotes collagen for a firmer, smoother texture, improves the look of acne scars and supports healing, with every treatment customised to your skin.

What is skin needling?

Skin needling creates fine micro-channels in the skin, which stimulates its natural repair and collagen production. We use Dermapen 4 with Dp Dermaceuticals' customised meso glides, chosen for your skin. The treatment finishes with a hydrating cooling mask that delivers actives through the micro-channels, followed by medical-grade LED light therapy.

We also offer:

  • Hollywood Lift – Skin Needling, an elevated collagen-stimulating needling treatment covering the face, neck, décolletage and scalp, for laxity, dullness, pores, fine lines, loss of tone and hair thinning.
  • Dr Spicule Bio Microneedling, a needle-free option that uses marine spicules from sea sponges to refresh dull or dehydrated skin. Dr Spicule Peel & Glow is a more intensive version that targets pores, pigmentation and post-acne texture.
  • Skin Needling + Peel, which pairs microneedling with a professional peel for texture, scarring and pigmentation.

Enhancements for skin needling and the Hollywood Lift include meso glides, exosomes, the Uber Pro Peel, laser toning and radio frequency, as recommended by your clinician.

Who it suits

Skin needling may suit you if you have:

  • Acne scarring or uneven texture.
  • Fine lines or a loss of firmness.
  • Enlarged-looking pores.
  • Dullness.

Your clinician will recommend whether needling or bio-microneedling suits your skin and goals.

Before your treatment

For about 3 to 5 days beforehand:

  • Avoid retinol and prescription vitamin A, AHA and BHA acids, scrubs and exfoliating products, and other strong or irritating actives.
  • Keep your skin well hydrated.
  • Avoid significant sun exposure, tanning and anything that may irritate or compromise your skin.

Tell your clinician if you have active breakouts or skin infections, cold sores, or broken or irritated skin, or if you've recently started a medication, had another cosmetic procedure, become pregnant or had a change in your health. Numbing cream isn't routinely needed, but the choice is yours. If you'd like it, talk to us before your appointment so we can give you instructions.

What to expect

Your skin is prepared beforehand with active skin care and/or LED. On the day, your clinician cleanses your skin, performs Dermapen 4 needling with customised meso glides, then applies the cooling mask and LED. Downtime is minimal. With bio-microneedling, expect mild redness or tingling. A course of treatments is usually recommended; your clinician will advise how many and how often.

Concerns it can help

What it feels like

Most clients describe vibration, scratching or prickling. Bony areas such as the forehead can feel more noticeable. Bio-microneedling can leave a prickly sensation in the skin afterwards.

Aftercare: Dermapen 4 skin needling

  • Immediately after: pink or red skin that feels warm, tight, tender, slightly swollen and sensitive, similar to mild sunburn.
  • First 24 to 48 hours: redness and warmth settle gradually. Deeper treatments can cause a stronger response.
  • Days 2 to 5: dryness and flaking are very common. Let the skin shed naturally, and never scrub or pick it.
  • Days 5 to 7: most skin is settling well, but don't restart actives just because it's day 5. Wait until your skin feels comfortable and looks fully recovered.

How to care for your skin:

  • Hydration is your priority. Use the serum and moisturiser your clinician recommends, reapply as needed, and mist with a clean, clinician-approved hydrating mist. Avoid new products while your skin recovers.
  • For at least 5 days, and until fully healed, avoid exfoliating acids (glycolic, lactic, mandelic, salicylic), retinoids and prescription vitamin A, benzoyl peroxide, hydroquinone, strong kojic or azelaic acid, scrubs, exfoliating brushes, home peels and strong alcohol-based or irritating products.
  • Makeup: ideally none for the first 24 hours. After that, use mineral makeup only while you recover, with washed hands and freshly cleaned brushes and applicators. Dp Dermaceuticals Cover Recover may also be used when your clinician recommends it.
  • For at least 24 to 48 hours, avoid saunas, steam rooms, spas, very hot showers, excessive heat, vigorous exercise and heavy sweating. Avoid pools, spas and the ocean until your skin has healed.
  • Use broad-spectrum SPF 50+ every morning, reapply outdoors, wear a hat and seek shade. This is especially important if you're being treated for pigmentation.
  • Allow about 2 weeks before another intensive treatment on the same area (peels, laser, IPL, more needling, microdermabrasion, cosmetic tattooing or injectables) unless your clinician advises otherwise.
  • Support healing from the inside: stay hydrated, eat enough protein and vitamin C-rich foods, sleep well and avoid smoking.

Aftercare: Dr Spicule bio-microneedling

  • What to expect: a prickly sensation for up to 24 to 48 hours, with redness, warmth and tightness. You may notice mild swelling and mild to moderate flaking over the next few days, although some clients have very little. This is a normal part of the treatment response.
  • Avoid cleansing for at least 12 hours. Then press or pat products on, and don't rub. Avoid touching, picking or scratching your skin.
  • Stay makeup-free for 24 hours where possible, sleep on a clean pillowcase, and apply soothing hydration in the evening if needed.
  • For the first 5 days, avoid: heat, hot showers, saunas, spa treatments and exercise; swimming; direct sun; actives (retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, benzoyl peroxide); and exfoliants (scrubs, enzymes, acids).
  • Use your prescribed soothing serums and moisturiser, and SPF daily. Don't pick or pull at flaking skin. Your clinician may recommend gentle exfoliation and a hydrating mask once your skin has settled, but only on their advice.

Contact us (both treatments) if redness or swelling gets worse instead of better, or if you have increasing pain, unusual blistering, pus or discharge, signs of infection, a significant rash, or anything different from what you were prepared for.

Our approach

Every treatment at Skin Wellness Academy is part of the Skin Transformation System, our four-phase framework for holistic and clinical skin care. It integrates the best of Western scientific research, Eastern medicine and integrative wellness philosophy. It also looks at your biology, behaviour, goals and habitat to find the root causes of your skin concerns.

You're not just another patient in a clinic. Our dermal clinicians guide you through each phase of your skin journey:

  • Strategy: understand your skin, history, lifestyle and goals.
  • Rebuild: restore skin barrier, strength and healthy function.
  • Regenerate: stimulate healthy cellular renewal.
  • Maintain: protect results and age gracefully.

The strongest treatment is not always the best treatment. The right treatment is the one your skin is ready to use well. That's why all new clients begin with a Skin Strategy Session. Until we've properly assessed you and your skin, we can't recommend the best products, routine or treatments for you.
