IPL Skin Rejuvenation Pre & Post Care

Clinician in protective eyewear performing an IPL treatment on a client

IPL uses advanced light technology to target excess melanin, sun damage, freckles and uneven pigmentation. Here is how to prepare for your IPL treatment and care for your skin afterwards.

Quick care reminder

  • Hydrate
  • Keep cool
  • No actives
  • SPF 50+
  • Pigmentation may temporarily darken before it improves. This is a normal part of the treatment response.

Before your treatment

  • Avoid tanning, fake tan and significant sun exposure for 2 weeks before treatment.
  • Avoid retinol, exfoliants, acids and active skincare for 3 to 5 days before treatment.
  • Keep your skin hydrated.
  • Let us know about recent procedures, skin sensitivity, cold sores or medications.
  • Arrive with clean skin and no fake tan, where possible.
  • Tell your clinician if you have any cosmetic tattoo in or near the treatment area.

On the day

  • Alma Dye SR uses in-motion delivery and a cooling tip to keep treatment more comfortable.
  • You'll be given protective eyewear to wear throughout the treatment.

After your treatment: the first 24–48 hours

  • Redness, warmth and mild swelling are common.
  • Mild stinging or sensitivity can occur for the first few hours.
  • Use cool compresses or refrigerated soothing gel if needed.
  • Keep your skin calm, hydrated and protected. Use gentle skincare only, and SPF 50+ daily.
  • Avoid heat, exercise, hot showers, saunas, and friction until your skin settles.
  • Do not pick, scratch or exfoliate treated areas.

The following days and weeks

  • Treated pigmentation may darken, turn grey or look more noticeable before it lifts.
  • Some areas may look lightly bruised during healing.
  • Results develop gradually over the following days to 2 weeks.
  • For 2 weeks, avoid: AHA, BHA and other exfoliating acids; retinoids and vitamin A products; harsh active products or scrubs; benzoyl peroxide, peels or microdermabrasion; and swimming pools and chlorinated water while healing.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and protect your skin carefully.
  • For best results, a series of 3 to 6 treatments may be recommended, spaced about 2 to 3 weeks apart. Your Dermal Clinician will guide the best plan for your skin and concerns.
