Cosmelan Depigmentation Treatment Pre & Post Care

Mature woman wearing a hydrating sheet mask

Cosmelan is a complete treatment programme that combines the in-clinic Cosmelan 1 mask with a prescribed Mesoestetic home-care routine. Consistency throughout the programme is essential. The first week can be quite active, with significant redness, tightness, dryness and peeling expected as your skin responds to treatment.

Quick care reminder

  • Hydrate. Soothe. Protect. Repeat.
  • Your skin needs to stay hydrated and comfortable at all times: mist or spray every 2 to 3 hours, use plenty of sheet masks, and never let your skin dry out.

Before your treatment

  • Your Dermal Clinician assesses your pigmentation, skin condition and contributing factors at your Skin Strategy Session before confirming that Cosmelan suits you.
  • Follow any preparation routine your Dermal Clinician prescribes before your Cosmelan appointment.
  • Avoid tanning, sunburn and significant unprotected sun exposure in the lead-up to your appointment, and tell us about any recent cosmetic procedures, medication changes, pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Plan your first week: the first few days can be very red and peeling, so you may prefer to keep your diary light.

On the day

  • Your Cosmelan 1 mask is professionally applied at Skin Wellness Academy. You leave the clinic wearing the mask and keep it on at home for the prescribed time, usually about 8 to 12 hours, depending on your treatment plan. Your Dermal Clinician will tell you exactly how long to keep it on.
  • Don't let the mask become excessively dry or crack. For comfort, mist or lightly spray your skin about every 2 to 3 hours, keep the mask hydrated, stay somewhere cool and comfortable, and avoid heat and excessive sweating.
  • When your time is up, gently remove the mask with tepid water. An old face cloth helps, because the mask may stain fabric. Don't scrub or rub the skin aggressively.
  • Once the mask is removed, your skin may look very red and feel warm, tight and sensitive. This is expected.

After your treatment: the first 24–48 hours

  • Days 1 to 2 are generally when your skin feels most reactive. You may have moderate to strong redness, significant tightness, warmth or sensitivity, mild swelling and itchiness.
  • Comfort and hydration are the priority: mist your skin regularly, use your prescribed hydration products and use clinician-approved hydrating sheet masks as often as you need. Don't let your skin become excessively dry.
  • Follow the aftercare instructions provided for the first 72 hours closely for the best results.

The following days and weeks

  • Days 3 to 7: as the redness settles, your skin commonly becomes very dry, flaky and peeling. You may notice significant dryness, flaking, peeling or shedding, tightness, itchiness and areas that feel rough. This is an important part of the treatment. Keep your skin continuously hydrated and soothed, and do not pick, pull or peel away shedding skin.
  • Hydration is essential all week: mist regularly, apply your prescribed hydrating products, use sheet masks generously, keep your skin cool, drink plenty of water and never let your skin become excessively dry or uncomfortable.
  • Throughout your Cosmelan programme: use only your prescribed Mesoestetic products unless your Dermal Clinician advises otherwise; don't pick or pull peeling skin; avoid scrubs and manual exfoliation; and avoid AHAs, BHAs, retinoids and other resurfacing actives unless they are prescribed in your programme.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and apply your prescribed Mesoestetic SPF every day.
  • Avoid excessive heat, heavy exercise and excessive sweating, heated yoga, spas and saunas, and very hot showers and baths. Heat-inducing activities may need to be avoided for up to 2 weeks, depending on how your skin is healing.
  • Avoid swimming pools and chlorinated water while your skin is healing.
  • Avoid waxing and threading the treated area for about 4 weeks.
  • Don't have other dermal treatments unless your Dermal Clinician approves them.
  • After the first week, your skin should gradually become calmer and more comfortable. Keep following your prescribed Cosmelan home-care programme: the ongoing home care is an important part of the overall programme, and your Dermal Clinician will adjust your routine if your skin needs extra support.
  • Pigmentation improvement continues progressively throughout the programme. Results vary with the type and depth of pigmentation, hormonal influences, sun exposure, home-care consistency and your individual skin response, and pigmentation needs ongoing protection and maintenance.
