Laser Tattoo Removal Pre & Post Care

Smiling mature woman sitting outdoors with a water bottle

We use the Alma Harmony XL Pro Q-switched laser for tattoo removal. Every client starts with a patch test, and good aftercare between sessions helps your skin heal well.

Before your treatment

  • All tattoo removal starts with a patch test appointment, so your clinician can check how your skin and ink respond. Cosmetic tattoo pigments can react differently to laser and may darken.
  • Avoid tanning, fake tan and sun exposure on the area for at least 2 weeks before each session.
  • Arrive with the area clean, shaved if hairy, and free of creams or makeup.
  • Tell us about any medications, medical conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding, a history of keloid scarring, or recent sun exposure.

On the day

  • You will wear protective eyewear. Many clients describe the sensation as a quick snapping or flicking on the skin.
  • Straight after treatment, the area may temporarily frost (turn white). Redness and swelling are common.

After your treatment: the first 24–48 hours

  • Use a cool compress (wrapped, never ice directly on the skin) for comfort.
  • Keep the area clean and dry. Apply the aftercare product or dressing your clinician recommends, as directed.
  • Avoid hot showers on the area, saunas, spas, swimming, vigorous exercise and heavy sweating for at least 48 hours, and until any broken skin has healed.
  • Wear loose clothing over the area to avoid friction.

The following days and weeks

  • Blistering, scabbing or pinpoint bleeding can occur. Do not pop blisters or pick scabs; let them heal naturally.
  • Avoid swimming pools, the ocean and soaking in baths until the skin has fully healed.
  • Keep the area out of the sun. Once healed, apply SPF 50+ whenever it is exposed.
  • Ink fades gradually between sessions as your body flushes the particles away. Your clinician will tell you when to book your next session.

When to contact us

  • Please contact us if you notice increasing pain, redness or swelling, pus, a blister that becomes very large or painful, signs of infection, or skin colour changes that worry you.
  • If you have severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, rapidly spreading swelling or a high temperature, call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department.
